Did you know that satellites are important in ensuring we eat healthy food?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s and NASA’s Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) make sure fresh food continues to be available for you and your family. JPSS satellites provide information that helps farmers and gardeners decide how to take care of their plants. JPSS provides data to forecasters that can help predict severe weather that might damage crops. Satellite data also monitors conditions that might lead to plant diseases. Scientists rely on JPSS satellites for daily updates about land surface temperature, soil moisture, and vegetation products to help monitor and predict drought severity and provide valuable information for farmers. JPSS data also informs the U.S. Drought Monitor Map, which shows drought conditions for each U.S. region. In 2022, JPSS collected recipes from the community that uses ingredients you can find in your garden or at a local market. You can find these recipe cards on our website.
