The Mixtape
For my birthday recently, I got a present from one of my daughters. It was a keyring with a little code on it that when scanned with an app took you to a well known music streaming service and a personalised playlist for me to listen to of some of the songs we both liked. The technology impressed me at first, but then it struck me that this was just a modern take on an old idea - 'The Mixtape'. Anyone of a certain age will have made or listened to one of these home-made compilations of music on audio cassette in the 70s or 80s. They became part of popular culture, a form of self-expression, and in making one of these curated collections of songs people were elevated from a consumer of music, to a type of creator or editor of it.
Here are some of songs that were on that birthday playlist.
