Geocache Description:

Get ready for a fright.  This cache series is not for the faint of heart.  This spooky season explores some of the Colorado Springs area's most haunted locations with the Haunted Cache series.

**Please be respectful of the cemetery.  This is the resting place for many individuals.  They and their families deserve peace and respect.  So please be aware of your etiquette as you explore this beautiful and haunted location.  You will not need to disturb anyone or anything while looking for this cache.**

Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs was founded in 1871, making it one of the oldest cemeteries in the region.  It is known for its Pioneer Monument located in the historic pioneer section of Evergreen Cemetery. This is the original area of the cemetery with many of the stones dating to the 1860's. Over 1400 souls lie at rest in this area, however, only a handful of those graves are marked. William Jackson Palmer (1836–1909), the founder of Colorado Springs, is buried here.  So is Helen Hunt Jackson, Native American activist and namesake of Helen Hunt Falls.

Other residents of Evergreen Cemetery are not resting so peacefully.  Evergreen Cemetery is well known for its ghost stories and hauntings.  A headless Woman in Black has been seen wandering the wooded grounds for over a century.  The Evergreen Chapel and the morgue underneath is one of the most haunted locations in the cemetery.  It has been featured on My Ghost Story on the A&E Network.  Evergreen Cemetery volunteer, Mike Coletta witnessed a ghost suddenly opening and closing a crypt door in the chapel basement morgue.  It is also said that a former cemetery caregiver killed himself there and he was buried in the cemetery, but the location of his body is unknown.
