Την δεκαετία του 1780 ο ατρόμητος πειρατής Κρυπτογένης έσπερνε τον τρόμο στα νερά του Αιγαίου. Ο θρύλος έλεγε ότι μπορούσε να συνεννοηθεί με τα τέρατα της θάλασσας και με τη βοήθειά τους κούρσευε όποιο πλοίο συναντούσε. Στη κατοχή του είχε ένα περίτεχνο σπαθί, αραβικής προέλευσης, που ήταν το σήμα κατατεθέν του. Από τις λεηλασίες είχε μαζέψει ένα αμύθητο ποσό, τον οποίο έκρυψε στα παράλια της Αττικής. Έστησε παγίδες και γρίφους γύρω από τον θησαυρό του για να είναι ο μόνος που θα τον βρει. Όμως, το χειμώνα του 1789 έγινε μια δυνατή φουρτούνα και ο Κρυπτογένης χάθηκε στη θάλασσα. Μαζί του χάθηκε και η τοποθεσία του θησαυρού του.

In the 1780s, the fearless pirate Kryptogenis was spreading terror in the Aegean waters. The legend has it that he could communicate with sea monsters and with their help he was able to conquer any ship he encountered. He had in his possession an elaborate sword, of Arabic origin, which was his trademark. From the looting he had gathered a huge fortune, which he hid on the shores of Attica. He set traps and riddles around his treasure so that he would be the only one to find it. But, in the winter of 1789 there was a huge storm and Kryptogenis was lost at sea. The location of his treasure was lost with him.
