Lavender is a beloved herb that's fragrance has been said to calm nerves, soothe insect bites, and lull insomniacs into sleep. It's a great addition to any garden and a favorite of essential pollinating insects like bees. It's also highly drought tolerant and thrives in arid places like the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and...you guessed it, California. But not all flower fields are as forgiving to dry conditions.
To help monitor and predict drought conditions, scientists use a complement of the Joint Polar Satellite System's land surface temperature, soil moisture, and vegetation products derived from multiple instruments that are assimilated into the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and North America Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS) systems. The NLDAS is the main information source for the current U.S. Drought Monitor.

Felix Kogan, NOAA Environmental Monitoring Branch Research Scientist says, “Since drought prediction is very challenging, drought monitoring and impact assessment are very important to address food security."
One great way to use lavender, spread seeds, and save water is to make recycled paper embedded with seeds! You can learn more about how to do this simple craft that makes a great gift here.
