FRAGMA - Livadi Astypalea
Artificial lake:
The lake is used for potable water supply to the Western wing of the island and contains normally sufficient water for up to approximately two years, depending on water consumption. The water, basically rain water, is filtered and chlorinated in the small station near the lake and then fed into the drinking water system. The water is also used for irrigation in the Livadi valley. A kind of road / Canal runs from the lake to the beach of Livadi to handle excess water, what normally does not happen.
The lake was constructed in 1997 and has a capacity of 1,040,000 m3.
Trails
A trail exists at the north side of the lake starting at the north side of the dam (see photo) and ends uphill at the dirt road between the little churches of Stravos and Aghios Vasilios. The road at the Norths side is difficult to find, if it still exists. The trail is marked with little signs on a post. See the picture. It is to be noted that signs may be missing. It may also be difficult to pass the small valleys at the North side at high water level of the lake. Apart from this, it is basically a nice tour during the cooler periods of the year. The distance from the junction with the trail to the Chora is approximately 6 km. The dirt road, with beautiful views, is accessible for cars.
