Geocache Description:

Aloha!

This cache is just minutes from the Kahului Airport and gives a full view of Haleakala as well as the West Maui Mountains. The Kahului airport code is OGG paying homage to Bertram J. Hogg, an avaition pioneer who worked for Hawiian Arlines. OGG started out as a Naval Air Station in 1942, and after the war was turned over to the Hawaii Aeronautics Commission. In June of 1952, Kahului Airport began commercial airline operations. Today, OGG is the second most visited airport in the state of Hawaii, and saw 6,050,254 passengers in 2021. The flight between Maui and Honolulu is the 13th most heavily-trafficked air route in the US.

On a personal note, I first flew into OGG as a four year old in 1981 and some of my earliest memories are of this airport. In those days the terminal was much smaller and once the plane arrived you waited for a rickety alumimium staircase to be wheeled up to the door and everyone walked across the tarmac into the terminal. I still rember the first thing I smelled walking out onto that staircase....salt, flowers, and jet fuel. The wind was whipping my hair around and the sound of our feet clomping down those metal stairs, people laughing and so happy to be in Maui, the excitement of new adventures in this exotic land (we were from Minnesota)...magic. After all these years I still feel that way everytime I come home after a trip...Maui No Ka Oi!!

***NOTE ABOUT CACHE CONTAINER***  Make sure the log container is properly seated in the cache when returning to hiding spot and please don't cut off the zip tie, it is there to keep log container from falling out if tipped - just slide zip tie down to release the log and back up to secure when finished. Mahalo!!
