Punta Ala è una nota località balneare situata sulle pendici settentrionali dell'omonimo promontorio. La cittadina ha una popolazione di 402 abitanti ed è una popolare destinazione balneare estiva.
Punta Ala era anticamente conosciuta come Punta Troia, dal nome dell'isolotto di Troia (toponimo derivato dalla corruzione fonetica dell'antico Portus Traiani) riportato nelle fonti latine e oggi meglio conosciuto come isolotto dello Sparviero. Fu l'aviatore italiano Italo Balbo, che aveva acquistato alcune fortificazioni e ville nella zona, divenute poi sue residenze, a cambiare il nome in Punta Ala, traendolo dalla terminologia aeronautica.
Pur presentandosi come una località balneare moderna, funzionale ed esclusiva, Punta Ala era una terra di confine tra il Principato di Piombino a nord e il Granducato di Toscana a sud. Il timore di invasioni piratesche fece erigere numerose fortificazioni a difesa di questo tratto costiero. I castelli più famosi nelle vicinanze sono la torre Hidalgo, la torre di Cala Civette e il castello di Punta Ala, quest'ultimo eretto dai Medici sul promontorio a sud-est della località per controllare il tratto costiero a nord di Castiglione della Pescaia.
Oggi la località è rinomata per il suo attrezzato porto turistico e per le regate veliche che vengono periodicamente organizzate dal locale Yacht Club Punta Ala, che è stato il primo club a impiegare Luna Rossa. La località è una meta turistica d'élite in ogni stagione, grazie alla presenza di lussuose residenze, seconde case e barche ormeggiate al porto.
Percorso per arrivare alla cache, passo dopo passo:
Come prima cosa è necessario lasciare la macchina nell’area di parcheggio sopra alla marina, in Via del Castello. Una volta fatto ciò, va superata in direzione ovest la piccola rotonda dopo il parcheggio, prendendo la strada a sinistra. L’ingresso di quest’ultima è vietato alle automobili ed è sbarrato con una barriera automatica: è però possibile superarlo a piedi, girandoci attorno ( N 42° 48.165 E 010° 44.243 ). Bisogna poi proseguire a dritto in salita sulla rampa asfaltata, oltre la larga curva, fino a che non si trova un sentiero sterrato in discesa sulla destra ( N 42° 48.178 E 010° 44.125 ). Da questo punto in poi basta proseguire a dritto sul percorso, fino al promontorio. Una volta che vi trovate il muretto di mattoni con due/tre buchi sulla sinistra, basta proseguire di qualche metro sul percorso e troverete la cache sotto a due sassi nel mezzo ai cespugli, sulla sinistra.
La ho nascosta in un posto sicuro, senza che sia necessario sporgersi/avvicinarsi al limite della scogliera: raccomando comunque cautela nel cercarla e poi prenderla, in quanto la scogliera è molto alta!

Punta Ala is a well-known seaside resort nestled on the northern slopes of the promontory of the same name. The small town has a population of 402 people, and it is a popular summer seaside destination.
Punta Ala was formerly known as Punta Troia, after the name of the Islet of Troy (a toponym derived from the phonetic corruption of the ancient Portus Traiani) recorded in Latin sources and today better known as the Islet of the Sparrowhawk. It was the Italian aviator Italo Balbo, who had purchased some fortifications and villas in the area, and which later became his residences, who changed the name to Punta Ala, drawing it from aeronautical terminology.
While presenting itself as a modern, functional, and exclusive seaside resort, Punta Ala was a borderland between the Principality of Piombino to the north and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the south. The fear of pirate invasions caused a number of fortifications to be erected to defend this coastal stretch. The most famous castles nearby are the Hidalgo tower, the Cala Civette tower and the Punta Ala castle, the latter of which was erected by the Medici on the promontory southeast of the locality to control the coastal stretch north of Castiglione della Pescaia.
Nowadays, the resort is renowned for its well-equipped marina and for the sailing regattas that are periodically organized by the local Punta Ala Yacht Club, which has been the first club employing Luna Rossa. The place is an elite tourist destination in every season, thanks to the presence of luxurious residences, second homes and boats moored at the port.
The trail to reach the cache, step by step:
As a first step, it is necessary to leave the car in the parking area above the marina, on Via del Castello. Once this is done, it is necessary to pass in a westerly direction the small traffic roundabout after the parking area, taking the road to the left. The entrance to the latter is forbidden to cars and is barred with an automatic barrier: however, it is possible to pass it on foot, going around it on the left ( N 42° 48.165 E 010° 44.243 ). You must then continue straight uphill on the paved road, past the wide curve, until you find a dirt path downhill on the right ( N 42° 48.178 E 010° 44.125 ). From this point on, simply continue straight on the path to the headland. Once you find the small brick wall with two/three holes on the left, just continue a few meters on the path and you will find the cache under two stones in the middle of the bushes, on the left.
I have hidden it in a safe spot, you do not have to lean out/approach the edge of the cliff: I still recommend much caution in looking for it and then taking the container, as the cliff is very high!
