Geocache Description:

English :

The ground we walk on is made up of a living world. The science of soil is called pedology. This science studies the formation and transformation of soils, also called pedogenesis. To do this, pedologists cut the soil into slices, which are also called horizons or layers, parallel to the surface and relatively homogeneous. These horizons help explain the formation of the soil, which is the result of a process of alteration of the parent rock.

Pedologists have defined each layer of this alteration according to the following organization:

O - organic horizon, that is to say where dead organic matter (remains of living beings) is deposited, rich in litter.

A - mixed horizon (normally located on the surface of the soil) of incorporation of organic matter into mineral matter.

B - horizon of accumulation of mineral matter deeper down.

C - horizon formed in the alteration zone of the parent rock.

R - unaltered parent rock. Geological layer from which soils were formed.

There are 3 types of parent rocks:

- magmatic rocks that are the result of the cooling of magma (rhyolite, trachyte, rhyodacite, andesite, basalt, granite, syenite, granodiorite, diorite, gabbro)

- sedimentary rocks that are formed by the successive deposition of mineral or organic sediments that can be of detrital origin (decomposition of older rocks) or organic (composed of the remains of skeleton organisms, shells, tests, remains of coral massifs or plant decomposition) or chemical (mainly formed by evaporation then precipitation modifying the chemical composition of its elements such as salt or gypsum).

- metamorphic rocks that are the result of the transformation of existing rocks under extreme conditions of heat and pressure that alter the texture, mineralogy and often the structure of the initial rocks, creating new distinctive characteristics such as schist, schistosity, gneiss, marble and slate, among others

Questions to validate the Earthcache :

1. What horizons can you see on the slice of the Chabrières forest?

2. According to your observations on site and with the help of the explanations above, what type of source rock from the Chabrières site?

3. Optional : a photo of you or your personalized object in front of the slice of the ground
