Right now at this location, there is a great view but 25 years ago the area was covered in flames, ash and smoke.
That afternoon, a family of 4 were having a picnic on the nearby Chinamans reserve under a tree. A 2yo boy was playing with his ball. They had a great time until... The ball rolled under the BBQ, and the boy went under it to get it. That was when he realised he was too big to crawl under the BBQ and he fiddled to get to the ball, causing the BBQ to fall over. The ashes from the BBQ went on the tree and on the nearby grass, starting a fire. Panicked people ran out of the beach, some calling the firefighters.
The firefighters arrived soon and quickly located a 100mm hydrant which helped them stop the fire. Luckily little harm happened and no one was hurt. All thanks to the hydrant, which was just 6 meters away.
Don't you worry, we just made up this story 😄 But fire hydrants are still a very usefull feature that helps firefighters a lot.
