Geocache Description:

Introduction

The Songjeong beach area is a a coastal beach in north eastern Busan known for rockier coastlines and beautiful ocean vistas. This area was shaped during the late cretaceous period by the volcanic explosions that shaped the Yucheon Group Formations. This is one of the newest geosites in the Busan Geopark and it highlights a rather unique formation among geoparks in Korea.

To access the beach here you will have to go to the parking waypoint. There are stairs in the rear of Cafe Yoon's parking lot that give beach access.

Geosite Geology

Pseudotachylyte is a fine grained, glassy mineral that that forms on the edges of fault lines. It most commonly forms along the slip surface of fault lines. As the faults slip quickly past each other the friction melts the rock, which then quickly cools, usually by water, causing the glassy appearance distinct from the surrounding rock. Pseudotachylyte has been studied as evidence of past earthquakes and even called "fossil earthquakes" in scientific studies.

Quickly rub your hands together. It burns a bit doesn't it. Your hands are similar to each side of the fault in this case. The friction from the sliding faults caused enough heat that melted the rock. this resulted in a high viscosity melted rock. As the amount of melted rock heats up and grows it can even cause the faults to slip further because of the "lubrication" the melted rock is providing.

How to log this Earthcache

1. What causes the rock to melt and form pseudotachylyte between faults?

2. At the Earthcache coordinates look for the rocks in the photo below. Follow the fault line shown in the picture in the gallery. Along the fault line is some psuedotachylyte. Please describe its texture, color, size, etc.

3. Pseudotachylyte can be formed in alternate ways. What do you think is another way that psuedotachylyte can be formed?

4. Please take a picture with your GPS (or some other geocaching item of yours) at the Earthcache coordinates and upload it with your log. (This photograph is required)

5. Please send the answers to me by message on my profile. If your answers are not correct I will contact you. You may log the geocache now.
