The Cave
Welcome to Backbone State Park. This EarthCache brings you to a cave in the Northern part of the park.
Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the cave environment. Visiting or exploring caves for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.
Molten lava, crashing waves, seeping rainwater, and oil-eating bacteria: These are some of the forces of nature that, over many years, create caves from rock like limestone and sandstone.
Caves have been used for many different reasons. Lodging, protection from animals and elements, and food storage are just a few.
This will be an on going science experiment of which I will continue to track as people visit. The cave itself is not very big in size.
To get credit for this Earth Cache you must
message me the answers the following questions
1) Which of the forces mentioned above do you think formed the cave?
2) What is the temperature just outside the mouth of the cave?
3) What is the temperature inside at the deepest point you can get to?
4) Is this what you expected? Same or different
5) Optional - Take a photo of yourself or group.
Thank you for coming!!!
