A Happy Dog from Bagdad is een kleurrijk mozaïek van Halim al-Karim in Oud West. Straten in dit gedeelte van Amsterdam zijn vernoemd naar schrijvers. Halim nodigt je uit om je dromen en wensen achter te laten in het kunstwerk. Zeker in deze verwarrende tijden van oorlog en vluchtelingen is dit kunstwerk relevanter dan ooit.
De Iraakse kunstenaar Halim Al Karim (1963, Nafjat) nam het besluit bij aanvang van de Eerste Golfoorlog dienst te weigeren en onder te duiken. Hij dook onder in de woestijn waar hij werd gered door de Bedoeïen. De vrouwen gaven hem niet alleen te eten en te drinken maar leerden hem ook over hun gewoonten en gebruiken, geloof en mysticisme. Al zijn kunstwerken worden sterk door deze ervaringen gekleurd. In het mozaïek zijn verwijzingen terug te vinden naar het onmenselijke leven als vluchteling en naar het mysticisme.
Het is een opmerkelijk kunstwerk in het oeuvre van Halim al-Karim, dat meestal bestaat uit bewerkte foto’s. Het mozaïek geeft een mens weer, die door de oorlog de wil verloren heeft als mens te leven; hij ziet meer in het leven van een hond, wat geen echte vooruitgang is. Het enige dat de hond nodig heeft, is liefde; om dat te kunnen bereiken leest hij Het boek van bijgeloof en onzin. Dat boek is in het tableau terug te vinden in de goudenvierkantjes.
Op het moment dat de zon en maan de liefde bedrijven, zal er als teken een vliegende vis aan de hemel zichtbaar zijn. Dat brengt de hond in vervoering en laat hem met zijn boot naar het paradijs gaan. Op die boot heeft de hond in de daarop staand muur briefjes met wensen van mensen verzameld die hij meeneemt naar dat paradijs. Je kunt je wens achterlaten in een van de vele gaten in het mozaiek. Met het geheel wilde de kunstenaar de kijker meegeven dat in moeilijke tijden er via de fantasie/droom wellicht een mogelijkheid is de ellende te ontvluchten.
Omdat de container steeds verdwijnt heb ik een hele kleine container verstopt in Het boek van bijgeloof en onzin.

A Happy Dog from Baghdad is a colorful mosaic by Halim al-Karim in quarter Oud West (Old West). Streets in this part of Amsterdam are named after writers. Halim invites you write down your dreams or wishes and leave them inside the mosaic. Especially in these confusing times of war and refugees, this work of art is more relevant than ever.
The Iraqi artist Halim Al Karim (1963, Nafjat) took the decision to refuse miletary service at the start of the First Gulf War and to go into hiding. He went into hiding in the desert where he was rescued by the Bedouin. The women not only gave him food and drink but also taught him about their customs and customs, faith and mysticism. All his artworks are strongly colored by these experiences. In the image there are references to the inhuman life as a refugee and to mysticism.
It is a remarkable work of art in the oeuvre of Halim al-Karim, which usually consists of edited photographs. The mosaic depicts a man who, because of the war, has lost the will to live as a human being; he sees more in the life of a dog, which is not real progress. All the dog needs is love; in order to achieve that, he reads The Book of Superstition and Nonsense. That book can be found in the tableau in the golden squares. The moment the sun and moon make love, a flying fish will be visible in the sky as a sign. That brings the dog into raptures and lets him go to paradise with his boat. On that boat, the dog has collected notes with wishes from people in the wall on it that he takes with him to that paradise. You can leave your wish in one of the many holes in the mosaic. With the whole, the artist wanted to give the viewer that in difficult times there may be an opportunity to escape the misery through the fantasy / dream.
Because the containers keep on disapearing i now placed a very small container and logrol in one of the holes in The Book of Superstition and Nonsense.
