Karel Appel (1921 - 2006) is een van de bekendste Nederlandse kunstenaars van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij hield zich bezig met verschillende disciplines in de kunst. Naast schilder, graficus en  beeldhouwer was hij ook ontwerper van decorstukken en theaterkleding.
In 1978 maakte hij een serie houtdrukken met als thema "Circus".
De serie bestaat uit 30 afbeeldingen, verdeeld over drie portfolio boxen met ieder 10 afbeeldingen. Deze serie werd in een oplage van 130  gedrukt. Daarnaast werd er van elke afbeelding nog een aantal zogenaamde "artists proof" afdrukken gemaakt.

Karel Appel (1921 - 2006) is one of the most famous Dutch artists after the Second World War. He was involved in various disciplines in art. In addition to being a painter, graphic artist and sculptor, he was also a designer of theater sets and theater clothing.
In 1978 he made a series of woodblock prints with the theme "Circus".
The series consists of 30 images, divided into three portfolio boxes with 10 images each. This series was printed in an edition of 130. In addition, a number of so-called "artists proof" prints were made of each image.

De cache ligt in de buurt van de Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. De Nieuwe Spiegelstraat vormt samen met de Spiegelgracht het hart van het Spiegelkwartier, een buurt met veel antiekzaken en kunstgalerieën.
