De naam van deze straat heeft weinig van doen met het mythische wezen, maar verwijst naar een van de eerste grote fabrieken in Nederland: de Koninklijke Sphinx. Dit bedrijf werd in 1834 opgericht door Petrus Regout en produceerde glaswerk, serviesgoed en aardewerk (keramiek), later ook tegels en sanitair. Uiteindelijk werd zelfs de hele aangrenzende Maastrichtse wijk naar deze fabriek genoemd: "Ceramique".

The name of this street has nothing to do with the mythical creature - instead, it refers to one of the first large mechanical factories in the Netherlands: the Royal Sphinx. This company was founded by Petrus Regout in 1834 and produced glassworks, china and pottery ('ceramics'), later also floor tiles and sanitary china like washbasins and toilet bowls. To honor the impact it had made on Maastricht's history, the whole neighborhood was finally named after this factory: "Ceramique".
