Il Bosco di Santa Luce è un'area forestale di circa 1600 ettari prevalentemente a latifoglie, con prevalenza di lecci, cerri e carpini neri, situata nelle colline a monte degli abitati di Santa Luce e Chianni. Attraversato da sentieri e strade transitabili, nelle zone più aperte offre un ampio panorama sul lago di Santa Luce, sulla costa e sull'Arcipelago Toscano. Fino a un passato abbastanza recente, il legname di questi boschi veniva usato per alimentare le fornaci con cui si produceva la calce dal pietrisco estratto nelle vicine cave. Abbandonata dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, questa fornace mostra ancora nella sua struttura il metodo di produzione della calce, sono ancora ben visibili le camere di combustione dove si raggiungevano temperature molto alte, necessarie alla reazione chimica con cui le rocce calcaree venivano decomposte in calce viva e anidride carbonica. The Bosco di Santa Luce is a forest area of about 1600 hectares mainly with deciduous trees, with a prevalence of holm oaks, Turkey oaks and black hornbeams, located in the hills above the towns of Santa Luce and Chianni. Crossed by paths and thoroughfares, in the more open areas it offers a broad panorama of Lake Santa Luce, the coast and the Tuscan Archipelago. Until a fairly recent past, the timber from these woods was used to fuel the kilns with which lime was produced from the crushed stone extracted in the nearby quarries. Abandoned after the Second World War, this furnace still shows the lime production method in its structure, the combustion chambers are still clearly visible where very high temperatures were reached, necessary for the chemical reaction with which the calcareous rocks were decomposed into quicklime and carbon dioxide.
