Geocache Description:

This is multi cache designed to take less than one hour in the Southern Cemetery. To be able to undertake stage 2, it is best you do this during daylight hours. Stage 1 can be done before turning up to site.

Geocaching can sometimes feel like you are a detective, following clues and instincts on find the containers.

Have you noticed that many of the great detectives are portrayed in books, films and plays with distinctive noses?

The most famous Detective in the world is Sherlock Holmes.

Whilst I couldn't find a simple link with the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle with Dunedin. I was chatting with a colleague after a quiz and we discussed what it would be like to share a surname with a famous fictional character, esp. one people believe is real.

As I set up ready for a CITO, I decided to grab my Sherlock Holmes puzzle book and in here it was mentioned that some people in 1880’s, not long after the first story was published, people were thinking they were reading a bio and not a work of fiction.

I wonder if that could be said of anyone buried here?

Stage 1 – Listed co-ordinates

I decided to find if anyone here was named Holmes and yes there is a family plot, far too many passed away too young to be able to read or know of the famous detective with whom they share a name.

As the lettering is worn and hard to read even on a good afternoon, I don’t expect you to be able to take numbers off this one.

From the listed co-ordinates you need to travel 156m at a bearing (angle from north) of 67 degrees to find the marble angel who will help you onto the final.

Stage 2- at projected co-ordinates

Take the answers off the column below the angel’s feet.

A= Number of letters in David’s surname.

B= Number of letters shown for David’s title (before his name, second line).

C= The third digit of the year he died.

D= The last digit of the year he died minus the month (number 1-12) he died.

W= The second digit of the year he died.

X= Number of letters in the location he had worked starting with the letter H.

Y= The number of letters of the first word below the flower carved into the column.

Z= Very last digit on the bottom of the of the column (after roman numerals).

Cache can be found at S45 5A.BCD E170 2W.XYZ

Checksum;

A+B+C+D+W+X+Y+Z = 26
