The Lamb’s Settlement Cemetery was established in 1839. It is located just north of Osborne Road in Centre Township St. Joseph County, Indiana.
The cemetery’s name comes from the Lamb family that settled in the area in 1832. Isaac and Elizabeth (Rusell) Lamb were married on June 26, 1830 in Guilford, North Carolina before moving to Indiana. They remained in Centre Township and raised their children Samuel (sadly died at birth), Julianna Elizabeth, Rueben and Josiah.
Isaac and Elizabeth are buried just south and west of the cache’s location if you would like to stop and say hello. Time is slowly eroding their information from their headstones but Elizabeth’s name still boldly stands out. Elizabeth passed away in 1855 at the age of 74. Isaac passed away in 1864 at the age of 82.
Also in the cemetery, are many of their neighbors who had settled in Centre Township throughout the years. If you look at the old area maps of the time you will see the land owners names listed on the parcels. Among them are Fisher, Shafer, Alward, Klinker, Slough, Annis, Shively and Kern. That is just to name a few.
I really enjoyed researching the history of the Lamb Family. I went back many generations as the family was rather interesting. I also learned quite a bit about Centre Township and some of the very interesting stories of people and families that lived in our county. Perhaps that is a story for another cache?
This is a lovely place to stop and visit while exploring the country roads. You may pull off the road onto the grass to park.
