Countless shipwrecks occurred on the River Plate coasts and the Atlantic Ocean. This dark panorama, plus the pressure of sailors and merchants made the Spanish Crown decided in 1799, the construction of a lantern in Cerro de Montevideo, the first light that illuminated the coasts of the Río de la Plata and one of the first in America.

Punta del Este lighthouse was built the 17th of November 1860 by Tomas Libarena in the southernmost point of Uruguay, Punta Salinas, in order to guide navigation in the Atlantic Ocean and River Plate.

At the very beggining It was planned to be located on Lobos Island, but the fishermen claimed that the light bothered the seals and sea elephants, that is why it was finally moved to the peninsula.

From the very beggining it was the symbol and reference of the peninsula. it was also, for many years, the tallest building in the city.

It was made with a mix of volcanic sand (brought from Rome, Italy) which is harder than cement and allows it to be perfectly preserved until today.

It is 45 mts. height and the crystals which constitute its illumination system were brought from France, This system is electrical, but in case of an emergency it works with acetilene gas. The lighthouse has an inside spiral staircase of 150 steps.

It has a focal height of 44 meters, geographic range of 18 miles, luminous range of 11 miles, luminous intensity of 43,000 candles and emits 2 white flashes every 8 seconds.

Back in 1907, in the signature album of the lighthouse, someone wrote: "We hope that the light of Punta del Este Lighthouse will soon illuminate the best seaside resort city of South America". The lighthouse, in silence, listened to the request and made it come true.......

Innumerables naufragios ocurrieron en las costas del Río de la Plata y el Océano Atlántico. Este oscuro panorama, sumado a la presión de marineros y comerciantes hizo que la Corona española decidiera en 1799, la construcción de un Faro en el Cerro de Montevideo, la primera luz que iluminó las costas del Río de la Plata y una de las primeras de América.

El faro de Punta del Este fue construido el 17 de noviembre de 1860 por Tomás Libarena en el extremo sur de Uruguay, Punta Salinas, para guiar la navegación en el Océano Atlántico y el Río de la Plata.

En un principio estaba previsto ubicarlo en la isla de Lobos, pero los pescadores afirmaron que la luz molestaba a las focas y elefantes marinos, por lo que finalmente se trasladó a la península.

Desde sus inicios fue el símbolo y referente de la península. también fue, durante muchos años, el edificio más alto de la ciudad.

Fue elaborado con una mezcla de arena volcánica (traída de Roma, Italia) que es más dura que el cemento y permite que se conserve perfectamente hasta el día de hoy.

Son 45 mts. de altura y los cristales que constituyen su sistema de iluminación fueron traídos de Francia. Este sistema es eléctrico, pero en caso de emergencia funciona con gas acetileno. El faro tiene una escalera interior de caracol de 150 escalones.

Tiene una altura focal de 44 metros, alcance geográfico de 18 millas, alcance luminoso de 11 millas, intensidad luminosa de 43.000 velas y emite 2 destellos blancos cada 8 segundos.

Allá por 1907, en el álbum de firmas del faro, alguien escribió: “Esperamos que la luz del Faro de Punta del Este ilumine pronto a la mejor ciudad balnearia de Sudamérica”. El faro, en silencio, escuchó el pedido y lo hizo realidad.......
