The New Haven Botanical Garden of Healing is a serene and tranquil space dedicated to victims of gun violence on the edge of the West River with a beautiful view of West Rock!
This area was created by the mothers of victims of gun violence as a special place to remember their loved ones. The garden is a place of hope and healing on Valley Street in New Haven, CT. The entry path has dedication bricks, placed by year, bearing their names. The bells chime softly in the breeze. In the center is 3D art that depicts a family- and as you walk the path you can see how the violence shatters the family. In the ending circle is the Tree of Life surrounded by a wall of phrases that the mothers mounted in hopes that people who are reflecting on their loss can postively associate with. Standing at The Tree of Life enables you to see how the 3D art bonds back together.
My friend and coworker Rodney Stokes was a victim of gun violence. A brick bears his name. One night many years ago he was shot in an alley near a bar after an argument with a girl that threw her shoe at him. His wake was unforgettable.
With each new tree and flower planted, the mothers are taking positive action to build public awareness of the magnitude of the problem of gun violence and invest in the future of our community.
The mothers invite you to participate:
1) Sign up to receive email updates on the garden if you are not already on the email list.
2) Volunteer in the garden on Saturdays 9 am- 12 pm in the summer beginning June 4 and through the fall.
