Tabla 2. Od kod ime Meljski hrib?
Meljski hrib je 398 m n. m. visok hrib na severovzhodnem robu mesta Maribor in je del Slovenskih goric. Ime je dobil po meliščih na južnem pobočju. Po drugi različici izvira ime iz starodavne tradicije mlinarstva, saj so bili vzdolž obrežja reke Drave nekoč postavljeni številni plavajoči vodni mlini. Za Meljski hrib je namreč značilno strmo JZ pobočje oziroma klif, ki je nastal zaradi rečne erozije reke Drave. Na tem mestu namreč Drava ob svojem izhodu iz Dravske doline zadene ob Mariborske gorice kot del Slovenskih goric. Pri Meljskem hribu Drava močno spremeni smer toka in od tu naprej teče proti Ptuju vzporedno s Slovenskimi goricami.

Meljski hrib je geološko zgrajen predvsem iz laporjev tortonske starosti (miocen). V glavnem gre za siv lapor z vložki peščenjaka in peska. To so krhke, drobljive kamnine, ki jih uvrščamo med mehke karbonatne kamnine. Zaradi takšnih kamnin, ki s svojimi lastnostmi omogočajo močnejše erozijske procese, so Slovenske gorice razmeroma nizke in reliefno močno razgibane.
Na Meljskem hribu so bile najdene sledi keltske postojanke (postojanka - zavarovani kraj, mesto, kjer se daljši čas zadržuje vojaška enota) iz 1. stoletja pr. n. št. (Kelti, skupno ime za ljudstva in plemenske skupnosti mlajše železne dobe v srednji Evropi).

Meljski hrib je naravni rezervat. Njegova klifna oz. podorna stena z meliščem je rastišče termofilne flore in pomembna ornitološka posebnost, predvsem kot zbirališče ujed. Skupaj gnezdi tu 61 vrst ptic (med drugim pisana in siva penica). Med njimi jih je 13 uvrščenih na rdeči seznam ogroženih vrst ptic Slovenije. 30 vrst ptic se tu zadržuje zunaj gnezditvenega obdobja ali tu prezimuje.

Board 2. Where does the name Melje Hill come from?
Melje Hill is a 398 m a.s.l. high hill on the northeastern edge of the city of Maribor and is part of the Slovenske gorice. It got its name from the scree slopes on the southern hillside. According to another version, the name originates from an ancient milling tradition, as numerous floating watermills once stood along the banks of the Drava River. Melje Hill is characterized by a steep SW slope or cliff, which was formed by river erosion of the Drava River. At this point, as the Drava leaves the Drava Valley, it strikes the Maribor Hills as part of the Slovenske gorice. Near Melje Hill, the Drava sharply changes the direction of its flow and from here onward flows toward Ptuj parallel to the Slovenske gorice.

Melje Hill is geologically composed mainly of marls of Tortonian age (Miocene). These are mostly gray marls with interbeds of sandstone and sand. These are fragile, crumbly rocks that are classified as soft carbonate rocks. Due to such rocks, whose properties allow stronger erosion processes, the Slovenske gorice are relatively low and very rugged in relief.
Traces of a Celtic outpost (outpost - a fortified place, a location where a military unit stays for a longer period) from the 1st century BC were found on Melje Hill (Celts, a collective name for peoples and tribal communities of the Late Iron Age in Central Europe).

Melje Hill is a nature reserve. Its cliff or landslide wall with scree is a habitat of thermophilic flora and an important ornithological feature, especially as a gathering place for birds of prey. A total of 61 bird species nest here (among others the Common Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat). Of these, 13 species are listed on the Red List of endangered bird species in Slovenia. Thirty bird species stay here outside the nesting period or overwinter here.
