This cache can be approached from two directions. For a nice little hike, park at the first parking area on the right when you enter the Oil Well Flats area. Head generally SE on the trail called Tectonic Shift. Follow it about a half mile until your GPS says you need to leave the trail. You'll be on a small corner with a straight stump sitting off to the side. Approximate coordinates N38 31.950 W105 12.860. The cache is about 335 feet from the trail. You might have paw prints to follow. Be careful not to stray too far to the right or left. There be cliffs, waiting to gobble you up.
The cache has plenty of room for treasure. Look for a dark brown container. It starts with an assortment of shiny things, a First Geocache card, and a holiday greeting.
Don't forget to take in the view of Island in the Sky to the east.
When approaching from this direction, you can continue up the trail about another half mile to another cache, The Sentinel.
If the roads aren't muddy and you don't mind rough driving, you can make your way to the alternate parking coordinates. Follow Path of Least Resistance to Tectonic Shift and turn right. Total distance is about the same, but the trail is a bit easier, and this puts you in position to grab other caches.
