Clock 5 - Farm Adventures

The Story :
Being a tortoise, Dave needs a lot of time to wander around foraging for nice fresh grass shoots that have sprung up during the night, as well as any new leaves on the banks of the stream. This usually takes Dave from when the small hand reaches halfway up the left side to when it reaches the top. By then Spike climbs as high as he can in the sky. Before that he will while his way in the morning chatting to Bert and Paul, and in the latter part of the day when the big hand is on the right, he will ask Wiseman a few questions, as Wiseman always has his Big Red Book of Wisdom handy to look up any answers that he may have forgotten, or just to make sure that Dave is not trying to catch him out. He tried that last year when they had the yearly clinic at the farm and Iris the Hen had that nasty boil on her delicate area and could not sit to lay an egg for DAYS... |
Bert on the other hand is more obsessed with his Aunt Dotty who is losing all her spots. That is a calamity of note! Aunt Dotty is currently in ICU and this is so serious, that visitors can only come see her in her state of unspottiness just when the long hand goes East from West, but before lunch, and only for 60 of those 60 pieces that has 60 pieces in them. They asked Wiseman to search through his Big Red Book of Wisdom for a cure, but so far the book has not given any advice on lost spots. Just think.... how can you still be a guineafoul if you don't have your spots any longer.... Embarrassing, I would say!

Paul - being Paul - is always out first hour after the small hand moves from right to left and the big hand is still standing up, to look for fresh little caterpillars for protein, some nice juicy fat worms for lamp oil, a centipede or two for fibre and perhaps a scorpion stinger for his sewing basket. In his pantry he has row upon row of little jars where he keeps all these finds together with some berries and dewdrops he has collected. It is a nice collection - better than Uncle Robert's pantry by far. Every now-and-then when he gets a craving (and that is most of the day) he simply goes to his pantry to select something nice to nibble on. His pantry also came in very handy when Matilda's house was washed away in the last rains and she had no food. Paul made up a basket of all his favorite delicacies for her that time

Matilda was not that happy. She lived in an old rusted tomato soup tin with holes so big that the winter winds blew her curtains away. Then came that storm just before the small hand could reach the horizon and the big hand was still on the left. Poor little Matilda. Her whole house was swept away. Luckily she was outside under the Big Oak Tree taking some shelter, otherwise she would have been swept away down into the big river as well... and who knows if we would ever see her again

Miss Cissy always waits for lunch at the hospital when she can take them some fresh milk that Daisy has given her to take up. It is not too far, but takes her about an hour before she gets back to the farm to start doing her homework. She wishes that Miss Fartenstein can stop giving her so much homework! She has so little time to go chat to all the animals! In any case, how is "1+1" going to help her look after the little lambs when the storks leave them at the gate!! Last night there were TWO MORE! And you know what? They look JUST LIKE Shirly! I am sure the storks stole them during the night. Maybe Clive saw them and chased after them and made sure Shirly's lambs were home again the next morning
Miss Cissy learnt that counting the gongs of the big grandfather clock in the hallway with her tiny fingers on her left hand, she will know when it was time to go feed the baby chicks when there were enough gongs for each finger. And so it was that the grandfather clock said it was that time. Cissy knew that right after feeding the chicks it would be bath time, and did she like her bath time indeed! She had little plastic toy animals of all her friends on the farm - even Iris and Paul!

Sam on the other hand is far less interested in the goings-on at the farm. His sole purpose is to scare off Mafuta in the morning when he comes to work on his bicycle and then to lie in the sun until it is time for the small hand to go South and that is his best hour of the day. He would just have had a nice lunch, and what better way than to lie in the sun for an hour before going home. His mom does not worry about him, as Sam is well known to everyone as totally harmless. In fact - he does not even know any other food than the left-overs from the hospital that he eats from the kitchen when they are not watching. I am sure the staff drop a few meaty pieces on the floor just for him

Spike was in his usual afternoon spot shining some warm rays of sunshine into the hospital wards just as the little hand passes the triplets on the right and the long one pointed up in the sky. But the clock tower on the side gets in the way around that time of the day and casts a shadow over the hospital, so the sick ward only gets about one hour of nice sunshine
Clive, on the other hand, is the Sergeant-Major of the farm. He goes from enclosure to nest to the barn to stalls... and makes sure everyone is up and ready for their day. He starts just as Paul gets back home and finishes off with Shaun and Shirly out in the bottom field around the time we remember the Big Rains that took Matilda's little home away
Wiseman - being a wise old owl - will wait for Spike to go to bed when the little hand hangs down and the big one points up to the stars. He will make his way to the barn where he will keep the hay feed safe for the animals should any vermin try to steal some. He would first rest his good eye then the not-so-good one and keep alternating them until the hands have returned to the same positions before going back to his perch in the Big Oak Tree
Poor Iris... Being the oldest of all the hens in the Hen House she is a real authoritarian and makes sure all the hens have at least one egg in the nest when Wiseman comes around to check on production. Just that place... down there... where the boil was... still not healed.... makes it difficult to sit sometimes
