Jólakötturinn, or the Yule Cat/Christmas Cat, is a huge and nasty pet kept by the thirteen mischevious Icelandic Yule Lads and their troll parents, the mother Grýla (who eats naughty children) and the father Leppalúði (who is mostly just lazy).
Each Yule Lad has their own particular bothersome activity, many of them steal food they are fond of, such as skyr (a type of yoghurt, similar to kvarg) or sausages, while others slam doors, steal candles or peep through windows.
Jólakötturinn also has his own role: to eat those (especially children) that don't get any new clothes for Christmas! So in the olden days, even the poorest households made sure that each family member would get at least one pair of knitted woolen socks for Christmas so the evil cat wouldn't get them.
It has been speculated that this threat was used by farmers as an incentive for their workers to finish processing the autumn wool before Christmas. The cat has alternatively been interpreted as merely eating the Christmas food of the ones without new clothes. The perception of the Yule Cat as a man-eating beast was partly popularized by the poet Jóhannes úr Kötlum in his poem Jólakötturinn, the accompanying song recorded by Björk in 1987 is a popular Christmas classic in Iceland, you can listen to it here.
The expression is still widely used in Iceland today, for example in ads from clothing stores in the weeks leading up to the holidays: "ekki fara í jólaköttinn!" ("don't let the Yule Cat get you!")
The mystery
Just as I was about to write the mystery the blasted cat ran over my keyboard and wrote
%)%=)#/ =!/#)#%$
- I wonder what it means?
Please observe that GZ is quite popular with muggles during the day, so a visit in the early or late hours is recommended. I've also made the hint more detailed to facilitate the search.
ps. no cats were harmed in the making of this cache
