The rātā and pōhutukawa belong in the myrtle family of trees. Other members include mānuka, kānuka and swamp maire.
New Zealand has 11 rātā species:
- 3 tree species
- 1 shrub species
- 6 climbing rata species (these are vines and do not form trees).
