These roadside picnic area were every where back before burger joints or pizza places. Families would take along a picnic basket with their lunch and an ice chest with drinks. I remember doing that with my family when I was young. Cheaper than burger joints and a time to relax a few minutes for kids to burn off energy and adults to relax from the open highway.
