Mistley is a pretty port village on the south bank of the estuary of the River Stour. Famous for its many swans, its historical breweries and the listed 'Mistley Towers'. Also famous as the home of Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witch Finder General who struck terror into the local community during the 17th Century. His victims were hanged on the diminutive village green. A Roman road leading from Mistley to the nearby provincial capital of Roman Britain at Camulodunum (now Colchester) has led to the suggestion that there may have been a port in the vicinity of the modern village which served the town in the Roman period.
