Il pupazzo di neve
Sdraiarsi nella neve e disegnare con le braccia aperte un angelo è uno dei divertimenti più sbarazzini di ogni bambino, ma realizzare un pupazzo di neve non ha eguali: basta tanta creatività ed uno degli emblemi delle festività natalizie e dell’Inverno in senso generale è pronto… ah, non dimenticate la neve!
E’ buffo, gioioso e sorridente nonostante il freddo; esiste da tempi immemorabili e definirlo solo un pupazzo e riduttivo, dal momento che nel corso dei secoli ha rivestito molteplici valenze, spesso curiose.
Infatti, stabilirne con certezza l’origine storica non è semplice, ma Bob Eckstein ci ha provato nel suo libro “La storia del pupazzo di neve”, attribuendola al folklore nordico, con la prima rappresentazione nota che è contenuta nel “Libro delle Ore”, realizzato nel 1318 e custodito in una biblioteca dell’Aia in Olanda.
Tuttavia, una delle più suggestive testimonianze storiche risale già al XIII secolo e viene associata a San Francesco di Assisi: pare che il Santo, così almeno viene affermato in una parabola, adorasse i pupazzi di neve e ne incoraggiasse la realizzazione; il fatto che la neve scendesse dal cielo la equiparava a un dono divino, come divino era il suo candore. Per San Francesco erano degli autentici angeli, creature celesti che tenevano lontano le forze demoniache, ma erano anche gli intermediari tra gli uomini e Dio, a cui trasmettevano le loro preghiere ritrovandosi attorno ad un pupazzo di neve e si attendeva poi che si realizzassero quando la neve si sarebbe sciolta con i primi tepori primaverili.
Nel 1494, persino Michelangelo Buonarroti si cimentò con il candido omino: dopo la morte di Piero De’ Medici, figlio di Lorenzo “Il Magnifico” suo mecenate, accettò di realizzare una statua di neve e l’effimera scultura che Michelangelo creò per lui pare fu talmente strabiliante da farlo entrare subito alla corte medicea… mancano le prove e quindi dobbiamo crederci sulla parola.
Nel XVI secolo, l’uomo di neve fu invece protagonista di un rilevante evento sociopolitico: il cosiddetto “Miracolo di Bruxelles del 1511”. L’Inverno di quell’anno fu particolarmente rigido e il popolo, sfinito dal gelo e dall’indigenza, ideò un espediente originale per scagliarsi contro l’aristocrazia e la Casa Reale creando oltre 100 pupazzi di neve con le loro fattezze, deformandole in un modo tra il grottesco e il licenzioso, insomma una sorta di “fredda” satira politica.
Costantemente in sospeso tra fantasia e realtà, “L’uomo di neve” ha trovato il ruolo di protagonista anche nell’omonima fiaba di Hans Christian Andersen, pubblicata nel 1861 che è incentrata sul dialogo tra il pupazzo di neve ed un vecchio cane per il quale gli uomini di neve sono tutti accomunati dalla stessa sorte: vivere d’Inverno per poi sparire sotto i raggi del Sole. Tutti gli anni la stessa storia, in un ciclo perenne che presenta non poche similitudini con quello dell’esistenza umana.
Giunti ai giorni nostri, fa riflettere anche “La storia del pupazzo di neve” (2018) dello scrittore Angelo Paratico:
"Aveva nevicato tutta la notte. Così alle ore:
8:00 Ho fatto un pupazzo di neve.
8:10 Una femminista è passata e mi ha chiesto perché non ho fatto una donna della neve.
8:15 Così, ho fatto una donna di neve.
8:17 La mia vicina femminista si lamentava del petto voluminoso della donna di neve dicendo che rende un oggetto le donne di neve in tutto il mondo.
8:20 La coppia gay che viveva nelle vicinanze si è lamentata che avrebbe potuto essere una coppia dello stesso sesso invece dei soliti pupazzi di neve etero.
8:22 Un transgender mi ha chiesto perché non ho fatto un solo pupazzo di neve con organi staccabili.
8:25 I vegani si lamentano del naso di carota perché la verdura è cibo e non si deve usare per decorare le figure di neve.
8:28 Sono chiamato razzista perché la coppia di pupazzi è bianca.
8:31 Il signore musulmano attraverso la strada mi chiede di mettere il burqa alla donna di neve.
8:40 Arriva la Polizia che dice che qualcuno si è offeso.
8:42 La vicina femminista si lamenta di nuovo che il manico di scopa della donna di neve deve essere rimosso perché rappresenta le donne in un ruolo domestico.
8:43 Il responsabile per le pari opportunità del Consiglio è arrivato e mi ha minacciato di sfratto.
8:45 La troupe di telegiornali della BBC si presenta. Mi viene chiesto se conosco la differenza tra i pupazzi di neve e le donne? Rispondo: “Le palle di neve!” Si scandalizzano per la battuta e mi chiamano sessista.
9:00 Sono sui giornali come un sospetto terrorista, razzista, omofobo di nessuna sensibilità intento a fomentare divisioni.
9:10 Mi viene chiesto se ho complici… i miei figli vengono prelevati dai servizi sociali.
9:29 Dei manifestanti estremisti, offesi da tutto, marciano per strada e chiedono che venga decapitato.
Morale: Non c’è morale in questa storia. E’ solo il mondo in cui viviamo oggi e sta peggiorando a vista d’occhio.”
Concludo io: Come non bastassero i cambiamenti climatici, è dura la vita del pupazzo di neve ai giorni nostri… e sono solo le 9:30!

The Snowman
Lie down in the snow and draw with open arms an angel is one of the most cheeky amusements for every child, but making a snowman has no equal: a lot of creativity is enough and one of the emblems of the Christmas holidays and of Winter in a general sense is ready... hey, don't forget the snow!
He is funny, joyful and smiling despite the cold; it has existed since time immemorial and calling it just a puppet is an understatement, since over the centuries it has had many, often curious, meanings.
Indeed, establishing its historical origin with certainly is not simple, but Bob Eckstein tried it in his book "History of the Snowmen", attributing it to Nordic floklore, with the first known representation being contained in the "Book of Hours", made in 1318 and kept in a library in The Hague in Holland.
However, one of the most evocative historical testimonies dates back to the 13th century and is associated with St. Francis of Assisi: it seems that the saint, at least as stated in a parable, adored snowmen and encouraged their creation; the fact that the snow fell from the sky equated it to a divine gift, as divine was his candor. For St. Francis they were authentic angels, celestial creatures who kept demonic forces away, but they were also intermediaries between men and God, to whom they transmitted their prayers when they gathered around a snowman and then expected that were realized when the snow would have melted with the first warmth os Spring.
In 1494, even Michelangelo Buonarroti tried his hand at the candid little man: after the death of Piero De' Medici, son of Lorenzo "The Magnificent" his patron, he agreed to make a snow statue and the ephemeral sculpture that Michelangelo created for him seems it was so amazing that he immediately entered the Medici court... evidence is lacking and so we have to take their word for it.
In the 16th century the snowman was instead the protagonist of an important social-political event: the so-called "Miracle of Brussels of 1511". That year the Winter was particularly harsh and the people, exhausted by frost and poverty, devised an original expedient to attack the aristocracy and the Royal House by creating over 100 snowmen with their features, deforming them in a way between the grotesque and the lecentious, in short, a sort of "cold" political satire.
Constantly suspended between fantasy and reality, "The Snowman" also found the leading role in the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, published in 1861 which focuses on the dialogue between the snowman and an old dog who claims that the snowmen all share the same fate: living in Winter and then disappearing under the rays of the sun. Every year the same story, in a perennial cycle that has many similarities with that of human existence.
Reached the present days, "The story of the Snowman" (2018) by the writer Angelo Paratico also makes us think:
"It had snowed all night. So at:
8:00 I made a snowman.
8:10 A feminist came by and asked me why I didn't make a snow woman.
