This cache is placed at one of the entrances of Hoyt Park; a community park on the West side of Madison that used to be a sandstone and dolomite quarry. In 1890, the city of Madison acquired the quarry and decided to convert it into a recreation park. Owen Parkway was created then as a scenic pleasure drive and hiking trails appeared in the woods next to it.
In the 1930s, stone fireplaces and shelters were built by the Works Progress Administration, twelve have been restored and are still visible today. The park used to also host Madison's only ski jump ramp.
