Once upon a time, a couple of tourists, unsuspectingly soon-to-be geocachers, had a free afternoon somewhere in Crete waiting for their flight back to Luxembourg.
"Shall we have a look at this geocaching app we keep hearing about ? Let's see if there are any caches around and if we can figure out how to use those coordinates !"
And so they did. They soon headed for their first cache hunt at the West-end of Analipsi where they met friendly turtles in the Aposelemis wildlife refuge.
They asked themsleves: "Where is the cache, and what are we even looking for?"
They searched, they seached and they searched again, until they finally found something, and so they logged their very first cache!
One of the older turtles, having quietly observed the scene and offered herself a good laugh, called the two newbies and said:
- "You seem to be worthy geocachers, I hope you had fun ! I hear you live in Luxembourg and I would like to ask you if you wouldn't mind visiting our friends there and give them our best regards when you get back home. It has been a while since we met eachother and I wanted to send them an email but it turned out my smartphone was not as waterproof as advertised".
- "Sure ! Where are they?" said the young man, "Wait.. what ? Did you really just said something ? You can speak ? How... ?"
- "Hehehe you can meet them at... Errr... Hiha hehi hakeda be be hihaka". and the turtle floated away, with what looked a little too much like a satisfied smile on their face.
- "Hey wait, can you repeat that ? I didn't even ask your name !".The young man called again, trying to spot the old turtle but it was now gone, blending into the masses of desperately mutic turtles. He turned to is wife, hoping she'd seen the scene and could confirm he was not being crazy. "That's strange, it's as if it couldn't speak our language all of a sudden. But it did speak to us, right?
- "I heard it too but it doesn't make any sense ! Maybe we shouldn't have taken that glass of wine. I wish we had more time to track down a magic turtle it is already 16:00, we need to leave now or we will miss our flight." she said unequivocally.
More than one year and 197 logs later, it finally did make sense. Dazzled by their genius, they decided to place a cache as a tribute to the friends they made back there, and the new ones they met at the place the turtle told them about.
