The Resthaven Cemetery is located in rural Madison Township near Wakarusa in St. Joseph County, Indiana. I have always been drawn to this cemetery by that tall iron sign and the rural location. I like to explore and research the old country cemeteries and the people that are buried there.
Resthaven was established as a community burial ground with many generations of families buried here. I enjoyed walking the grounds and taking note at the very old graves that can be found here.
While walking the grounds, I "met" Lena Guerne Berger. I learned that Lena was born June 14, 1860 in Varen, Bezirk Leuk, Valais, Switzerland before coming to the United States and settling in Madison Township. Lena was married to Friedrich Berger and together they had five children. Emil, Jacob, Emma, Fred and Edward. Lena passed away on October 30, 1907 at the age of 47.
Lena's first born son, Emil was born June 14, 1882 in Switzerland. Emil passed away on January 2, 1984 at the age of 101! Emil was a farmer and lived almost 100 years of his life on his farm located on Madison Road just north west of Wakarusa in St. Joseph County.
