The Church of John the Baptist in Ashton dates from the 15th Century and contains a font dating from the same period, along with a selection of medieval stained glass. Perched on an outcrop in Teign Valley, it is described as having "a top quality rood screen with delicious medieval saints’ paintings" and "astounding religious grisaille paintings in the north chapel and chancel" whilst overall being "one of the most quietly intoxicating churches" in Devon.
There's very little, if any, phone signal in the churchyard and the village as a whole, so I strongly suggest downloading the cache details before travelling so you're not disappointed. For that reason, I've made the clues straightforward without the need for additional waypoints and placed the final only a short distance from the church, so no additional maps etc are needed to get there.
The headline coordinates will take you to the noticeboard. From there, you can either walk up the road hill and enter the churchyard via a gate next to the thatched cottage, or take the uneven zig-zag path up to the lychgate.
A = The number of letters in the surname of the current Reverend.
B = The number of spoon-shaped 'spikes' on each of the gates at the lychgate.
C = Alongside the slightly uphill path towards the thatched cottage, there is a sundial. It is mounted onto a stone plinth with C sides.
D = Follow the path round to the back of the church. As you pass the door at the western end of the church, note the colour of the button on the door. The name of this colour has how many letters?
E, F and G = Follow the path round into the lower part of the graveyard. Towards the end of the path, there is a memorial to Harold Hill. He died on April Eth 1915, aged FG years.
The cache can then be found at:
N 50º (F + G) E . [ZERO] [ZERO] D
W 003º (B / 2) (A - F) . F G (C + G)
