La iglesia juradera de los santos Emeterio y Celedonio se localiza en el entorno rural del barrio de Goikolexea (Larrabetzu).
Esta iglesia ha sido, durante siglos, uno de los lugares más importantes del Territorio Histórico de Bizkaia. Era una de las paradas obligadas en la ruta juradera que, desde Bilbao y hasta la iglesia de santa Eufemia en Bermeo, debían recorrer los señores de Bizkaia (título que a partir de 1379 recayó en los reyes de Castilla) jurando los fueros y libertades de los vizcaínos.
Una vez en la iglesia el Señor se comprometía a “guardar todas las franquezas y libertades, fueros, y usos, y costumbres que ellos han y ovieron en los tiempos pasados hasta aquí”.
Por aquí pasaron, entre otros, Enrique IV de Castilla en 1457, Fernando el Católico en 1476 e Isabel la Católica en 1483.
En este punto, la ruta juradera coincide con el Camino de Santiago.
La iglesia está dedicada a Emeterio y Celedonio, dos soldados romanos, posiblemente hermanos, que sufrieron martirio por decapitación al negarse a abandonar su fe cristiana.
Es un templo de una sola nave dividida en tres tramos de longitud creciente hacia los pies de la fábrica. La mayor parte del edificio es anterior al siglo XVII, cuenta con dos entradas y pórtico apeado en pies de madera que lo rodea, típico de muchas iglesias en el País Vasco. Es una mezcla de estilos: gótico, renacimiento y barroco.
Cuenta con uno de los retablos hispanoflamencos más notables y antiguos de Bizkaia, realizado una vez terminada la reconstrucción del templo (1520-1525). El hecho de que lo que es hoy un pequeño núcleo rural cuente con una obra de esta importancia se explica por ser, en el momento de su realización, una de las paradas de la ruta juradera.
En la restauración de 1991 se descubrieron pinturas murales de carácter fantástico, de finales del gótico. Son las primeras ilustraciones de este tipo encontradas en Bizkaia, pero, desafortunadamente, solo se conservan fragmentos.
The sworn church of Saints Emeterio and Celedonio is located in the rural surroundings of the district of Goikolexea (Larrabetzu).
This church has been, for centuries, one of the most important places in the Historical Territory of Bizkaia. It was one of the obligatory stops on the oath-swearing route which, the lords of Bizkaia (a title that from 1379 fell to the kings of Castile) had to follow to ensure the rights and freedoms of the community.
Henry IV of Castile in 1457, Ferdinand the Catholic in 1476 and Isabella the Catholic in 1483, among others, passed through here.
At this point, the oath-swearing route coincides with the “The Way of St. James”.
The church is dedicated to the saints Emeterius and Celedonius, two roman soldiers. Their legend states that they were tortured and finally decapitated for refusing to abandon their Christian faith.
It’s a rectangular temple with a single nave divided in three sections of increasing length towards the foot of the factory. It has a timber - floored portico that surround the building, typical of many churches in the Basque Country.
There are two entrances. The main Baroque entrance dates from the 18th century. The temple has one of the most outstanding Spanish -Flemish altarpieces in Bizkaia, only surpassed by that of the church of Saint Mary in Lekeitio. Of ostentatious architecture, the building is adorned with several scenes from the Annunciation, the birth of Christ and the cycle martyrdom.
To mark the restoration of the building in 1991, important late-gothic mural paintings were discovered. These are de first illustrations of this nature found in Bizkaia although unfortunately only a few fragments remain.
