Butlins Holiday Camp in Clacton-on-Sea opened on 11th June 1938 after the land was purchased by Billy Butlin in 1936. This proved to be bad timing as it was requisitioned by the Government during World War Two to house troops. It could have been worse, as plans were drawn up to use it as a Prisoner of War Camp, though it was spared this indignity.
Butlins, Clacton-on-Sea re-opened to the public in 1946, and the immediate post war years were its heyday, before a slow decline due to cheaper foreign package holidays, and eventual closure in 1983.

The camp stood empty and falling into disrepair for many years before being sold as development land, demolished and the housing development known as 'Martello Bay' was constructed in the early 1990's. Nothing remains of the former holiday camp at all other than photographs and memories.

The cache is placed opposite the original entrance to the camp.
