中野ブロードウェイが現在建つ敷地は元々、木造家屋が密集する地域でした。中野駅北口から続く商店街がそこで行き止まりになってしまっていたため、地元有志の発案により、ここをまとめて買収してビルを建て、早稲田通りに抜ける広い通路を貫通させようという計画が持ち上がます。「ブロードウェイ」という名称は、この「広い通路」に由来するのです。
度重なる設計変更と床面積確保のため、廊下等の共用スペースは最小限に抑えられ、メインストリート以外の廊下は自分の居場所がわからなくなるほど不自然に折れ曲がりました。エレベーターは数が少ない上にわかりにくい場所に追いやられ、階数を稼ぐ代わりに天井高は低く抑えられ、エスカレーターは上りしかなく中途半端なところまでしか行きません。
こうして利便性が犠牲となってしまった一方、その結果生まれた混沌とした空間が今やサブカルチャーの聖地として世界中から人を呼んでいるのです。

The site where Nakano Broadway now stands was originally an area with a high concentration of wooden houses. The shopping street leading from the north exit of Nakano Station dead-ended there, so local volunteers came up with a plan to acquire the entire area, build a building, and construct a wide passageway through it to Waseda Dori. The name "Broadway" is derived from this "wide passageway.
To accommodate the repeated design changes and to secure floor space, common spaces such as corridors were kept to a minimum, and corridors outside of the main street were bent so unnaturally that it was difficult to know where you were. Elevators are few in number and relegated to obscure locations, ceilings are kept low in exchange for more floors, and escalators only go up and only halfway up.
While convenience has been sacrificed in this way, the resulting space is what makes this building so attractive.
The cache is located near the entrance on the Broadway Nakano Station side.
