Geocache Description:

Welcome to Cache Across Maryland 2023. This year is the 20th anniversary of CAM. We have made this year a little special with a CAM cache in every county, plus Baltimore City.

This is one of the caches placed for Cache Across Maryland 2023. You must find a minimum of ten caches prior to the picnic held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 in order to receive a free Maryland Geocaching Society CAM geocoin.

Make note of the code word found inside each cache container. You must enter all the symbols into an online decoder in order to print your CAM certificate as well as print a claim form to submit and receive your geocoin at the picnic. More info on CAM is available here.

There are
FIVE MANDATORY COUNTIES. THOSE WILL BE GARRETT, ST MARY'S, CECIL, WORCESTER AND ANNE ARUNDEL. You can choose any of the other five counties to find a minimum of ten CAM caches.

B&O Railroad Museum

The B&O Railroad Museum is known as the birthplace of American railroading, and for good reason. It was here where the first stone of the railroad was laid, where the nation’s first mile of commercial railroad was constructed, and where the Mt. Clare Shops made innumerable contributions to the development of the rail industry. Today, the B&O Railroad Museum maintains 40 acres of the original property and boasts a collection of about 200 historic locomotives and rail cars. The museum is both a National Historic Landmark as well as a National Network to Freedom Underground Railroad Site.

The museum houses collections of 19th- and 20th-century artifacts related to America's railroads. The collection includes about 200 pieces of railroad locomotives and cars, 15,000 artifacts, and hundreds of thousands of archival documents and materials. The site also has many significant 19th-century buildings, including its iconic historic roundhouse as well as the pre-Civil War Mt. Clare passenger stations. Train rides are offered on the first mile of track.

The inaugural horse-drawn B&O train traveled the 13 miles (21 km) of the newly completed track from Mount Clare to Ellicott Mills (now Ellicott City, Maryland), on May 22, 1830, the first regular railroad passenger service in the U.S. The existing Mount Clare station brick structure was constructed in 1851. The adjacent roundhouse designed by Ephraim Francis Baldwin was built in 1884 to service the B&O's passenger cars.

For much of its history, the B&O had been collecting locomotives and other artifacts from its history for public relations purposes. This collection was stored in various places until the railroad decided to centralize it in a permanent home. The car shop of the Mt. Clare Shops was chosen, and the new museum opened on July 4, 1953. The museum and station were designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1961.

This cache is located outside and can be accessed without paying a fee, during daylight hours ONLY. As you are walking toward the building, go toward the wheelchair ramp at the back of the building.
