Geocache Description:

The Hang Li Poh's Well also known as King's Well, is a historical water well in Melaka City, Melaka. It was built in 1459 by the followers of Princess Hang Li Poh as the main source of water in the town. After the conquest of Malacca in 1511, the Portuguese led by Afonso de Albuquerque secured the well and used it as their main water supply. Later on, the Dutch which defeated the Portugese in 1677 surrounded the well with solid brick walls to protect the well.

Melaka came under British sovereignty after the signing of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, and had been part of the Straits Settlements until 1946. However, during the British period, they neglected the well and let it fall into disrepair. Nowadays the water from the well is not clean and it has also become a Wishing Well for visitors.

Located beside the Hang Li Po Well is the Melaka Warrior Monument, officially known as the Melaka Warrior Monument for the Chinese victims of Anti-Japanese occupation ( 马六甲华人抗日义士纪念碑;  'Malacca Chinese Anti-Japanese Volunteers Monument', MalayTugu Pahlawan-pahlawan Melaka untuk Mangsa-mangsa Cina akibat menentang penjajahan Jepunlit.'Malacca Warrior Monument for the Chinese victims as a result of opposing Japanese colonisation') is a monument built to commemorate the Chinese victims of the Empire of Japan occupation of Malacca as part of British Straits Settlements during World War II and was unveiled officially by then high commissioner, Sir Edward Gent in 1948.

The monument is inscribed with four Chinese characters, "忠貞足式" (pinyinZhōng Zhēn Zú Shì) in Chiang Kai-shek's handwriting, which means "their (those who have fought against the Japanese) loyalty can be taken as an exemplar"
