Various possible starting points for this, simplest is probably
from gate at N54 48.854 W002 03.507. Just follow the path. View
from the top is worth the walk on a clear day. Great Dun and Cross
Fells are to the west, the Cheviot to the North.
Two chimneys can be seen either side of Sikehead dam, arched
stone flues brought the fumes from the lead smelting mills to
chimneys high on the fells. The flues have mostly collapsed now,
though part of the one leading from Ramshaw to the chimney at the
east of the dam still survives.
PLEASE NOTE: This area is home to rare nesting birds in
spring/early summer. Sheep are grazed on it much of the year and it
is managed as a grouse moor. Please stick to tracks and KEEP DOGS
ON LEADS. thank you.
The derelict lead smelting mill
flued to its chimney up the hill
that smokes no answer anymore,
but points, a landmark on Bolts Law,
the finger of all questions
