One of my dear Scottish granny‘s favourite expressions was “wha’ a palaver!” - meaning what an unnecessarily elaborate or complex procedure.
She was smart, independent and pragmatic, and liked to cut straight to the chase.
She was also a cryptic crossword fiend, and I was inspired to try my hand at these puzzles because of her.
I was never much good, but I did enjoy the clever wordplay that came with a good cryptic clue, despite all the palaver involved!
