地質寶點公布處位於陽明山國家公園,此處有一座充滿硫磺的小湖,可觀察硫磺的不同特性,這座湖中存有一種硫磺在自然環境中較為少見的特殊型態。

硫磺礦業是台灣早期重要的工業,明朝便曾歷史記載原民與漢人以物易物,硫磺在西班牙人殖民、清朝、近代等時期都是重要的資源。這項工業直到開採成本過高而沒落。
陽明山硫磺礦床依其產狀可分為三種類型。
一、昇華型硫磺礦床:此類型常見於火山口附近,硫氣從硫氣孔噴出後附著於附近的岩石與土壤表層,進而形成硫磺結晶。
二、礦染型硫磺礦床:硫氣與硫質溫泉在地底噴發,影響周遭圍岩中的礦物,發生蝕變作用進而形成硫磺礦。
三、沉澱型硫磺礦床:硫氣噴發於火口湖中,在水中形成硫磺粒、硫磺粉末,然後沉澱堆積於湖泊底層。

硫磺特性
硫磺顏色:純硫磺為淡黃色或亮黃色。硫化物容易作用於不同的礦物質,形成多樣性的顏色。硫化物作用於鐵時,會產生黃鐵礦的黃銅金色(俗稱愚人金),或是形成二硫化亞鐵的黑色,或是其他各式礦物顏色。當含有硫化氫的溫泉從地底剛噴發出來時,其實是透明清澈無色,接觸到氧氣之後才會轉變為白色,這是因為氧化作用會讓硫化氫轉變為不溶於水的膠體粒子。
硫磺的化學風化作用:硫化氫與水發生化學作用時會產生強酸,所以,硫氣噴發口附近的岩石常會出現洋蔥狀風化。

At the posted coordination, there is a pond full of mineral sulfur in Yangmingshan National Park. Different characteristics of sulfur can be observed here. A unique form of sulfur can be distinguished in the natural environment.
Sulfur mining is an important industry in early Taiwan. Since the Ming dynasty, the history was recorded of trading sulfur for groceries between indigenous people and Han Chinese. Sulfur was an important resource during the Spanish invasion, the Qing Dynasty, and the recent time. The industry was suspended because of the high cost of mining.
There are three forms of the resource of sulfur mining in Yangmingshan.
1. Sulfur Gas. This form of sulfur is most common in the neighbourhood of volcanoes. Sulfur gases were emitted from fumaroles and attached on the surface of rocks or soil nearby, forming sulfur cystalation.
2. Mineral Alteration Sulfur. Sulfur gases and hot springs were emitted underground affecting the minerals in rocks, causing the process of alteration.
3. Precipitated Sulfur. Sulfur gases were emitted and suspended into the crater lakes forming the sulfur particles or powders. Then, they were precipitated on the bottom of the lake.

The characteristic of Sulfur
Color of Sulfur. Pure Sulfur is in the color of pale or bright yellow. Sulfide can easily react to different minerals causing different colors. Sulfide reacts to iron causing pyrite (fake gold), ferrous disulfide (blake), and others. Diverse colors were produced. When the hot spring containing hydrogen sulfide was gushed up from the ground, the water might be clear and colorless. However, the color of the hot spring changes into white after the exposure to oxygen. The oxidation transforms hydrogen sulfide into insoluble colloidal particles.
The role of sulfur in chemical weathering. Hydrogen sulfide reacts to water causing acid. It is corrosive, Hence, rocks near the fumaroles are full of onion weathering.
