The structure here is a replica of the Half Moon Shoal Lighthouse which once stood in Galveston Bay at Half Moon Shoal, about 2.5 miles from this location. The original lighthouse was constructed in 1854. It was not used during the Civil War, however the lighthouse wasn't destroyed or damaged. It returned to service in 1868. However, the Great Storm of 1900 which destroyed most of Galveston, didn't spare this lighthouse. During the storm, a steamship broke free of its mooring and drifted into the lighthouse, killing its keeper.
The lighthouse is one of the attractions along the Skyline Drive. I highly recommend walking it, although it makes for a pleasant drive as well. It's a one way road accessible from the south.
Please be respectful and stealthy, as always.
