Geocache Description:




Originally named New Antrim by its first settler John Suffern, this small village was a strategic outpost for Revolutionary War heroes General George Washington and the French Comte de Rochambeau. When the Erie Railroad arrived in the 1840s, Suffern became an accessible hub for tourists who were looking to escape NYC for long weekends and stay at the summer camps around Lake Antrim. Around the turn of the 20th Century, developers built up Suffern's business district and provided housing for people who wished to live here full-time.

At present, Suffern is a commuter town offering easy access to/from NYC. Many historic markers and buildings remain in/around the village, so this walking tour will bring you to a few of the more popular ones. If you'd like to read more about Suffern's history, click here.
