POMNIK KU PAMIĘCI OFIAR OBŁAWY AUGUSTOWSKIEJ

Na Rondzie Solidarności odsłonięty został 23 września 2019 roku monument upamiętniający “prawdopodobnie ok. 2 tys. ofiar ludobójstwa z lipca 1945 roku, w tym żołnierzy Armii Krajowej, mieszkańców Ziemi Augustowskiej, Sejneńskiej, Sokólskiej, Suwalskiej oraz Polaków pozostałych za tzw. Linią Curzona”.

Są to ofiary największej, nadal niewyjaśnionej powojennej zbrodni dokonanej na Polakach po drugiej wojnie światowej. Zostali wywiezieni z miejsc zamieszkania i brutalnie zamordowani przez oddziały NKWD, Armii Czerwonej i sowieckiego Kontrwywiadu Wojskowego “Smiersz”. Do dziś nie odnaleziono miejsc ich grobów.

Darczyńcą pomnika był Okręg II Stowarzyszenia Weteranów Armii Polskiej w Ameryce w Nowym Jorku, zaś wykonawcami artyści rzeźbiarze Wincenty Chlipała i Piotr Chwastarz. Umieszczony jest na granitowym postumencie, z którego wyłaniają się dłonie trzymające znak Polski Walczącej. W 2015 roku Sejm RP uchwalił dzień 12 lipca Dniem Pamięci Ofiar Obławy Augustowskiej z lipca 1945 r.

MONUMENT IN MEMORY OF THE VICTIMS OF THE AUGUSTÓW ROUNDUP

On September 23, 2019, a monument commemorating "probably about 2000 victims of the genocide of July 1945, including soldiers of the Home Army, inhabitants of the Augustów, Sejneńska, Sokólska, Suwałki Lands and Poles remaining for the so-called Curzon line".

They are the victims of the biggest, still unexplained crime committed against Poles after World War II. They were taken away from their places of residence and brutally murdered by NKVD and the Red Army units with the Soviet Military Counterintelligence "Smersh". To this day, their graves have not been found.

The donor of the monument was District II of the Association of Veterans of the Polish Army in America in New York, and the contractors were sculptors Wincenty Chlipała and Piotr Chwastarz. It is placed on a granite plinth, from which emerge hands holding the sign of Fighting Poland (Kotwica, WWII emblem of the Polish Underground State and Home Army). In 2015, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland passed July 12 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Augustów Roundup of July 1945.
