Trig-Gig Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

rocketman1: I decided to archive this cache as two of the areas always seem to be under water. I may open it in the future with new locations for the micros.

Geocache Description:

This is a (3 part) multi cache, which will be a good test of your math skills.

The first two are micros, and the final cache is now in a 2-1/2 gallon plastic container. In the first cache you will find the heading from cache #1 to cache #2, and the North coordinate for cache #2. You must use some basic math and trigonometry to calculate the West coordinate of cache #2. Once you find the second cache you will find the headings from cache #1 and #2 to the final cache #3. Then you can use trigonometry functions to calculate the North and West coordinates to cache #3.

The difference between the WGS84 coordinates of each cache was used to arrive at a value to represent the distance between caches, and the headings were then calculated. There is no need to be concerned by true North and Magnetic North. (Assume the world is flat.) Just do the math and you should end up with the original WGS 84 coordinates that I started with.

If you hate math or were just never very good at it, you may want to pass this one up. However, I do want people to find my cache, so I have included a link to my web site where you can down load a pdf document that has all of the trig formulas you will need. I have also included a link to a diagram of the three caches in jpg format. This diagram will show you the arrangement of the three caches, and it can also be used as a calculation sheet. I have updated the diagram slightly, and the math hints available on the cache diagram are no longer encrypted. The only other thing you may need is a scientific calculator.

If you can not down load the files, please send me an e-mail, and I will send them to you.

Go here for trig formulas and a diagram of the cache site, or click on "User's Web Page" above:

All three caches are hidden in neighborhood parks, located within about two miles of each other, but it may take some time to calculate the coordinates to the final cache site. You may have problems with tree cover at all three cache locations in mid summer. The terrain is easy, but the difficulty depends on your math skills, so I had trouble rating this one.

The original contents of the final cache include: log book and pen, car wallet, plastic frogs, mini stereo head phone set, Blue Jackets coasters, magnetic key holders, hackey sack, mini screw driver set, gas match lighter and tape measure.

I would like to thank Boundertom for his excellent advice and feed back he has given me on this cache.

Hope you have fun!
