In the summer of 1985, Birregurra was thrown into the spotlight when Channel 10 arrived to film a miniseries called The Henderson Kids. There certainly was a buzz around the little town and surrounding district.
It was a story of teenage siblings Steve and Tamara Henderson who lived in Melbourne with their mother. After their mother dies in an accident, the children go and live with their Uncle Mike in Haven Bay, the local policeman. They also inherit land from their mother called Hendersons Point.
At first they find it hard to fit in with the local kids, and the country way of life. But the local kids soon realise these city kids are alright, and close friendships are formed.
Some of the buildings such as the milkbar , Primary School, the sawmill, the service station, a couple of private homes and farms and Mooleric Homestead were used for filming. And a lot of the locals were used as extras, especially the kids from the school.
The main characters Steve and Tamara were played by Paul Smith and Nadine Garner. Several other well-known actors also had roles such as Kylie Minogue, Ben Mendelsohn, Jane Hall, Annie Jones and Tottie Goldsmith just to name a few.
Nadine Garner won a Logie Award in 1985 for her role as Tamara Henderson.
