Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in a park adjacent to the former St Joseph's Orphanage and Boys' Home (sometimes called Waverley Home) in Doon Street which was run by the Sisters of Mercy from 1920 to 1982.  It opened in 1920 in the former home of politician Scobie Mackenzie and in 1937, with demand for its services growing, a new building was erected. For many years this institution, and St Vincent's Orphanage in South Dunedin, provided a home for hundreds of children.  From 1983 until 1988 the buildings were used to provide emergency accommodation for women and children.

If you look at the windows on the left hand side of the building from the street, you will see a few stained glass windows, some with a cross shown on them.

Mr Magoo72 stayed here with his brother on a couple of occasions, when his parents went away on holiday.  He told the other children that his parents were not dead, but had simply gone on holiday and would be back to collect him soon, but they laughed at him saying that's what they had all been told. He was lucky he had his older brother there with him for support!  Otherwise, he has only good memories from his stays there.  He especially enjoyed the front row seating provided to the boys at events such as the circus.

At that time, the orphanage was surrounded by farmland owned by the Catholic Church.  Mr Magoo72 remembers there being pigs and milking cows on the land where the playground is now situated and beyond.  On the land on the other side of the building, there were extensive vegetable gardens.

The cache area is overlooked, so please be aware of muggles and exercise stealth.
