Update 14-5-2024: After two stolen caches, I decided to change the form a bit. Apparently, soms people found the earlier caches so nice(?), they didn't place them back, but took them home...? (One time, ok, but twice??) This new version is a little less unique, so I hope this one stays with me and the mill. :)

Ik loop hier dagelijks, en elke dag fascineert dit mooie kleine molentje op het IJplein me. Deze 'ijzeren waaierpomp' schijnt nog nuttig te zijn ook: als het waait, ververst'ie de watertjes met vissen die je bij de flats ziet met vers IJwater. Dit is ook een prachtige plek om uit te kijken over het IJ, met het Centraal Station en het Muziekgebouw recht aan de overkant.
" Een Bosman-molen type WBC met polyester wieken en staarten, met 7 meter toren (3 meter domtoren en 4 meter molentoren) en 3 meter wiekenstel. Aan het serienummer 8182 te zien is hij gebouwd halverwege de 1980-er jaren." staat op www.molendatabase.net.
Op een website die inmiddels niet meer bestaat vond ik het verhaal van een John Versendaal, die het molentje tien jaar onderhield:
"Eens per jaar was het IJplein de eerste stop tijdens mijn controle-rondje Noord Holland. Als ik het speciaal daarvoor gemaakte plankje, boven in het molentje klemde om zo olie bij te vullen in de kop, en de lagers van de wieken te smeren, zag ik de bewoners van het IJplein, langzaam wakker worden en naar hun werk gaan.
Het molentje is eigenlijk een vreemde eend in de bijt. De meeste van deze molens zijn gemaakt om het water op niveau te houden terwijl deze er staat om de achtergelegen karpervijver van doorstroming te voorzien.
De molen bij het IJplein is technisch type 77. De eerste onderdelen voor asaandrijving kwamen uit de achteras van kleine vrachtwagens uit Amerika, de A Ford en de V8. Toen deze onderdelen niet meer te verkrijgen waren, heeft Bosman in 1977 zelf een molenkop ontwikkeld. Mal maken, afgieten en afwerken. Het zijn goede herinneringen aan een tijd waarin alles nog zelf gedaan werd.
Bij het molentje op het IJplein kwamen de dingen samen; mijn liefde voor techniek en een mooie omgeving. Ik ging er nooit met tegenzin naartoe, het was een mooi begin van de dag."

Don't forget to boat across the IJ river on one of the ferry's at least once when you're in Amsterdam. It's free. :) This cache is just 100 meters from the northern dock of the ferry F2 to IJplein.
I walk here every day, coming from and going home by ferry, and every time this funny little windmill on IJ square fascinates me. This 'iron impeller pump' even seems to be useful: when the wind blows, it refreshes the ponds you see near the flats with fresh water from the IJ river. This is also a wonderful place to look out over the IJ, with Central Station and the Muziekgebouw (litterally: music building, mostly for modern classical music and jazz) right across the water.

On a website that has since ceased to exist I found the story of a John Versendaal, who maintained the mill for ten years:
"Once a year, the IJplein was the first stop during my inspection tour of North Holland. When I refilled the oil at the top and lubricated the bearings of the blades, I saw I the residents of the IJplein wake up and go to work.
The windmill is actually an odd one. Most of these are made to keep water level, while this one exists to provide water flow to the carp pond behind.
The windmill at IJplein is technically type 77. The first shaft drive components came from the rear axle of small trucks from the United States, the A Ford and the V8. When these parts were no longer available, Bosman developed its own mill head in 1977. They are good memories of a time when everything was handmade.
Things came together at the windmill on the IJplein; my love for technology and a beautiful environment. It always was a nice start to the day."
