Hadleigh and Joffrey attended the Science Conference. It was the thirty fourth annual gatherings for the Southern States. On Monday morning they attended a lecture on the properties of some of the actinide heavier metal elements. Of particular interest to Hadleigh were the sections on Uranium and Thulium. The lecture room used was labelled room Ba. This interesting room numbering system meant that the location was on level 02 below ground level. After exiting the lift, the young scientists simply followed a series of Hydrogen-filled balloons to the lecture room. There was a box posted near the door labelled 961.
Monday afternoon had Hadleigh and Joffrey settling into their accommodation. Whilst Hadleigh sorted out a problem with some rechargeable Ni batteries, Joffrey helped himself to a glass of wine.
“Did you know that some Sulphur is added to wines to help fermentation?”
“Of course. Let’s have some of this dried seaweed which contains Iodine which is good for us. Hey, do you know what gas is used for specialised light sources?”
“Yeah, Xenon. Why do you ask?”
“Just completing this science crossword.”
“O, should charge you a Nickel for each answer.”
“Well, okay. What gives air its blue colour?”
“Nitrogen.”
“And what element is used for the manufacture of safety glass?”
“Erbium. Hey, let’s go to the cocktail bar on level F to do some socialising before dinner.”
“Sounds good.”
Dinner was on level C of this high-tech underground facility. Joffrey was looking forward to his meal. He didn’t really enjoy that roasted seaweed. The dining room was room Cu and was on the East side of the building and had seating for 150 people. After taking their seats, glasses of beer were obtained. Hadleigh hurriedly grabbed his glass and bumped his false front tooth whilst taking a drink. “Lucky that ceramic tooth contains Zirconium which makes it very strong.” The ever-inquisitive Joffrey noticed that the Oxygen levels throughout the building were marginally increased to help with any ventilation problems. They were both looking forward to the after-dinner slide show on astronomy. There was a rumour that some of the latest discoveries were included. For example, galaxy Sn 42-536.
