Geocache Description:

Geocache Description and location

You are looking for a small magnetic container with no room for swappable items. It's hidden on the site of the old Coliseum Cinema on a busy corner so stealth will be required to find and replace the cache.

The Coliseum

On September 8th 1914 the towns first luxury cinema opened.  This strikingly attractive building, with its white tiled facade and elaborate domed top was called The Coliseum.

It stood , a much admired landmark , in a prime location on the  corner of Abbey road and Rawlinson Street until its closure in 1964 and subsequent demolition in 1977.

The cinema could accommodate over 1000 people and due to its huge stage and auditorium made a splendid theatre as well. So throughout its lifetime films were intermixed with shows.

It also held the distinction of showing Barrows first talking picture ,Al Jolson in " The Jazz Singer" shown in March 1929.

There were four shops situated on Abbey road next to the cinema which catered for cinemagoers. The profits from these shops helped pay the cinemas rates.

Please see the gallery for photos of the cinema building.
