In epoca medievale Zambra era un piccolo paese attraversato dal torrente omonimo, che scendeva dalla Val Graziosa e confluiva nell'Arno presso Navacchio. In un documento del 1277 si parla di due comunità separate dal torrente, quella di Santa Maria a est e quella di Sant'Iacopo a ovest. Nel corso del XVI secolo il corso dell'Arno fu deviato per formare una grande ansa che rallentasse la sua corrente per ridurre i danni provocati dalle alluvioni nella zona di Pisa, la confluenza fu spostata a nord e il paese di Zambra rimase sulla sponda opposta del fiume. Le due comunità così si unirono e la chiesa di Sant'Iacopo divenne la chiesa principale del paese. La chiesa di Santa Maria venne poi ricostruita nel 1612 e riprese la sua importanza. Nel 1848 un terremoto causò gravi lesioni alla chiesa di Sant'Iacopo, mettendo in luce alcune antiche pitture sull'abside. La chiesa di Sant'Iacopo rimase abbandonata per oltre un secolo, finché nel 1962 iniziarono i lavori di restauro che misero in luce gli affreschi che decoravano l'abside. Gli affreschi risalgono al IX secolo e riportano alcuni versetti della Bibbia, due alberi su sono posate una cicogna e un'aquila e alcune decorazioni. L'elemento più interessante è dato dalla rappresentazione di alcuni pesci, alcuni dei quali portano una corona, simbolo della presenza di Cristo nei fedeli battezzati. Il pesce coronato è stato scelto come simbolo del progetto "Spazio Cascina Arte al Centro" che si propone di valorizzare alcuni spazi vuoti del centro di Cascina con installazioni artistiche.

During the Middle Age, Zambra was a small hamlet crossed by the stream of the same name, which descended from the Val Graziosa and flowed into the Arno near Navacchio. A document from 1277 mentions two communities separated by the stream, Santa Maria to the east and Sant'Iacopo to the west. During the 16th century, the course of the Arno was diverted to form a large loop that slowed down its flow to reduce the damage caused by floods in the Pisa area, the confluence was moved to the north while Zambra ended up on the opposite bank of the river. The two communities thus united and the church of Sant'Iacopo became the main church of the hamlet. The church of Santa Maria was then rebuilt in 1612 and regained its importance. In 1848 an earthquake caused serious damage to the church of Sant'Iacopo, bringing to light some ancient paintings on the apse. The church of Sant'Iacopo remained abandoned for over a century, until in 1962 the restoration work began. The works brought to light the frescoes that decorated the apse. The frescoes date back to the 9th century and show some verses from the Bible, two trees on which a stork and an eagle rest and some decorations. The most interesting element is given by the representation of some fish, some of which wear a crown, symbol of the presence of Christ in the baptized believers. The crowned fish was chosen as the symbol of the project "Spazio Cascina Arte al Centro" which aims to enhance some empty spaces in the center of Cascina with art installations.
